Credit Card Application Strategy: Optimal Order
The order in which you apply for credit cards matters significantly. Different issuers have different rules, velocity limits, and inquiry sensitivities. Planning your application order can mean the difference between approval and denial.
Issuer Rules Overview
Chase (Apply First)
- 5/24 rule: Denied if 5+ new cards in 24 months
- Apply for Chase cards while under 5/24
- Most restrictive issuer — always prioritize
American Express (Apply When Ready)
- No hard limit on approvals
- Once-per-lifetime bonus rule (strictly enforced)
- Often pre-approves existing cardholders
- May claw back bonuses if account closed too quickly (< 12 months)
Citi
- 1/8 rule: Only 1 Citi card every 8 days
- 2/65 rule: No more than 2 Citi cards in 65 days
- 1/48 rule: Can only earn a bonus on the same card once every 48 months
Capital One
- Typically limits to 2 cards total (or close to it)
- Not very sensitive to inquiries
- Hard to get approved for 3+ Capital One cards
Barclays
- Inquiry sensitive — likes to see fewer recent applications
- Often best to apply when you have a clean recent history
Recommended Order
- Chase cards first (while under 5/24)
- Barclays (inquiry-sensitive, apply early)
- Citi (moderate restrictions)
- Capital One (if you have fewer than 2 cards)
- American Express (most lenient, apply anytime)
Velocity Guidelines
- 2-3 months between applications is a safe cadence
- Apply for cards from different issuers on the same day if going over 5/24 intentionally
- Business cards from most issuers don't count toward 5/24 (except Capital One and Discover)
